The man with the apple - like René Magritte (2)

Made by Tyra, grade 6
You need:
  1. white drawing sheet A4 size
  2. aquarelle pencils
  3. jar with water
  4. brush
  5. fine black marker
Rene Magritte is born in 1898 in Belgium. When Magritte is 13 years old, his mother commits suicide. She jumps in the river Samber and is found with her dress covering her face. This image has been suggested as the source of several paintings from Magritte: people hiding their faces with several objects.
In 1924 Magritte became friends with members of a surrealism group in Brussels: André Breton, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. These artists influence Magritte's work. In the end Magritte became famous with surrealistic paintings.
Magritte gave his paintings a realistic effect of surrealism. He painted simple objects, like a shoe, an apple, a pipe or a tree. Magritte took these things out of their ordinary environment and placed them in a special surrounding.
One of Magritte's most famous works is "La Trahison des Images" (The Treachery of Images). This is a very realistic painting from a pipe, with the text: Ceci n'est pas une pipe (This is not a pipe). The painting is not a pipe, but rather an image of a pipe. As Magritte himself commented: "The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it's just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture 'This is a pipe,' I'd have been lying!" By putting us constantly on the wrong track, Magritte forces us to think about art. Magritte thought it the task of an artist to place reality in a different context.

Students draw a part of a man or woman, from about chest height. Like Magritte, we see no face. And, like Magritte, the person has something on his head. In stead of the face, students draw an object of their choice. The drawing, person and background, has to be coloured with aquarelle pencils. Use water and a brush to create the effect of aquarel paint. Wait until the artwork is dry and outline everything with a fine marker.

Colourful cows, like Peter Diem

You need:

  1. white painting sheet A3 size or a canvas
  2. acrylic paint
  3. brushes
  4. jar with water
  5. paper towels

Peter Diem (1945) is a Dutch painter. Diem, born from a Dutch father and a German mother, came in Amsterdam at the age of 3. He had a difficult childhood in which the people of Amsterdam showed they were not charmed by Germans so soon after the Second World War. After highschool Diem went to a school for graphic design to study graphic work. Through several European countries Diem landed in the 70's in the USA, where he married and had children. Halfway through the 90's he returned to the Netherlands and settled with his Diem Museum on the Prinsengracht Amsterdam.

Diem is inspired by the CoBrA Group ( a group of artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam - see also my lesson about CoBrA artist Corneille). His style is abstract and expressive. He brings the paint thick on the canvas, sometimes directly from the tube. With brush, knife and fingers the bright coloured paint is spread across the canvas. 'Diem paints like a tornado, he lives his art'. Themes in his work are flying cows, Napoleon, Africa and Ernest Hemingway.

Show artwork of Diem on the digital board. Pictures are to be found on Diem's website or use the Google picture viewer and look for Peter Diem. Discuss Diem's work:

  • subject, Diem paints often cows
  • use of bright colours
  • simplicity of the image
  • thick black contour lines
  • no white spots anymore
  • the cow is full screen
Show students how to draw a simplified cow, by drawing a cow on the digital board (click on the picture to enlarge). Let the children draw a picture of a simple cow. They have to sketch thin, without drawing many details. The cow has to be painted with acrylic paint, considering the features of Diem's work. Paint a background. Outline the cow with black paint and a small brush. This will also eliminate the unevenness. And of course the work has to be signed, just like Diem does!

Birds like Corneille (2nd lesson)


This lesson about Corneille is almost the same as the lesson I posted a few days earlier. However, drawings in this lesson are made with oilpastels by students in a lower grade. 

 You need:
  1. white drawing paper A4 size

What to do?

Show examples of Corneille's work. What subjects do you see in his paintings? What can you tell about his style: bright colours, thick black outlines, few details, painted as if it was made by a child, an image that sometimes is not complete (missing parts at the edges).
 
Draw the outline of a bird with a black crayon. Make surethe bird reaches at three edges of the sheet: it should be big! Colour in bright colours and/or patterns. Paint the background with deluted blue ink. Stick the drawing on a coloured sheet.

Animals like Corneille

You need:
  1. white drawing paper A3 size
  2. tempera paint

Life and work of Corneille
Guillaume Cornelis Beverloo (1922 - 2010), Corneille, was a Dutch artist, born in Belgium and died in France. He is buried on the same cemetery as Vincent van Gogh, a painter he highly admired . 

Corneille was an autodidact. In his early years he painted realistic: still lifes, people and landscapes. In 1948 Corneille was involved in the creation of the CoBrA Group, a group of Danish (Copenhagen), Belgian (Brussels) and Dutch (Amsterdam) artists. Even writers and poets belong to the CoBrA group. The artists' group only existed for three years, but has been very important for Corneille's work. 
According to Corneille, the CoBRA artists want to express themselves on a expressionistic way, like children, by playing open-minded with colours and shapes. Since 1950 Corneille lived and worked in Paris. His paintings are bright and colourful. The sun, women, paradise, trees and birds are recurring elements. He is particularly fond of birds. His artist name Corneille is French for 'crow'.

What to do?
Show examples of Corneille's work. What subjects do you often see in his paintings? What do you notice about his style? Discuss the features: bright colours, thick black outlines, few details, painted as if it was made by a child, an image that sometimes is not complete (missing parts at the edges).
 

In this lesson students have to sketch very briefly (maximum 5 minutes!), to avoid drawing too many details and to force them to work big. Students may  also choose to sketch with a small brush and light yellow paint. This will automatically result in working big with little details. The yellow lines can easily be painted with different colours later.

Sketch the outline of a cat or bird and make sure this animal reaches at least three edges of the sheet: it should be big! Paint the animal in bright colours and/or patterns. Paint the background too. Leave the work to dry and outline everything using a small brush and black paint. Paint your name in black somewhere at the artwork, like Corneille did. Stick the painting on a coloured sheet.

Selfportrait in black and white

You need:
  1. canvas
  2. digital photograph
  3. acrylic paint
  4. brushes
  5. carbon paper
  6. pen
Show portraits made by Andy Warhol and discuss them. What is remarkable about those portraits? Would you recognize a Warhol? Why is that?
To make this selfportrait each child needs a digital portrait of himself. Use a photo editor to make the photo black and white. I used Corel Paint Shop Pro. Choose for 'image' and then 'grayscale'. Then click on 'effects', choose 'artistic effects' and then 'posterize'. Choose for four or five layers.
Print the photograph and trace it with a pen and carbon paper on a canvas. Paint the portrait with acrylic paint in greyscale. Paint the background in your choice of colours.

Tree of life, like Gustav Klimt

You need:

  1. black construction paper A4 size
  2. thick gold marker papier
  3. fine gel pens in metallic colours

Gustav Klimt (Austria, 1862 – 1918) was born near Vienna in a poor family. His father was was a gold engraver. This may have influenced Klimt in his use of gold in his paintings. In 1876, Klimt was awarded a scholarship to the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts . His work consists of paintings of mostly women, but also wallpaintings , drawings and collages. Klimt is much praised for the use of gold in his paintings.

Show some artwork of Klimt, and especially the painting 'Tree of life'. Discuss the distinctive features in the work: use of gold colour, the spiral branches, the bird, circles that look like eyes. Tell students about the symbolic significance of these motifs: the tree of life curls, just like in paradise, in all directions. On the lush branches grow flowers with eyes of wisdom and the paradise bird underlines the enchanting impact.

Give students a black construction paper. Let them draw the trunk of a tree that leads to curling branches. Fill the whole sheet with branches, of choose, just like the artwork above, a round shape. Fill the spaces between the branches with different patterns in metallic-coloured gel pens or markers.

Butterflies like Peter Callesen

You need:
  1. white copypaper (80 grams) A4 size
  2. coloured paper for background
  3. pencil
  4. cutter
  5. cutting mat
  6. glue

Peter Callesen (born in 1967) is a Danish artists who cuts artworks out of simple white sheets of copypaper. He uses the two-dimensional paper with three-dimensional shapes. This 3D shapes pop up from the sheet of or fall out. He doesn't add anything, just uses the plain sheet. The three-dimensional figures who seem to appear, are made from the same background.

Look at pictures of Callesen's work on his website www.petercallesen.com and discuss them with the students. See especially the work 'Hunting', on which you see a butterfly and a spider popping up from the paper. Discuss how this butterfly is attached to the background. Are there other possibilities for the butterfly to come out of the paper? The body may be stuck, but also part of a wing. By using different ways, you get variety in your work.

The children scetch a small number of butterflies on their white sheet. Let them not draw intricate wings, because the animals must be cut out and that is hard enough! put double lines on the places that are not to be cut. Choose different options for the butterflies: let the body be stuck, or the the lower wings.

Cut the paper butterflies carefully. Take care that your specified 'fixed' parts are not to be cut. Paste the work on a coloured background, but do not glue behind the butterfly. Fold the butterfly wings something up, to be sure they are free of the paper and the background is clearly visible.

Turning around with circles, like Sonia Delaunay

You need:

  1. white drawing sheet, cut at 21 cm by 21 cm
  2. markers or colour pencils
  3. coloured paper for background
  4. compass
  5. glue

Sonia Delaunay (Gradizhsk,1885 – Paris, 1979) was an Ukrainian-French painter, married to srtist Robert Delaunay. Her work includes paintings, textile design and stage design. In her work she used bright colors, obtained by the reflection of a prism or streetlights. This pure colours and shapes have an innovative impact, but especially an emotional power in itself. In her life she has experimented with many styles, including Orphism, cubism and abstract art. (Wikipedia).

All kids get a square drawing sheet of 21 by 21 cm. On this sheet they draw concentric circles with a compass. The eyes of the circles always have to be at the edge of the sheet. The circles are coloured with markers of colour pencils in maximum 5 colours.

When ready, cut the drawing in four squares of 10,5 by 10,5 cm. By rotating the four parts, a beautiful composition can be made. Paste those four pieces on a coloured background, leaving 1,5 cm between the squares.

People like Joan Miró

You need:

  1. drawing paper A4 size
  2. markers
  3. black waterproof marker
  4. coloured paper for background
  5. glue

Joan Miró's (Spain, 1893-1983) work contains paintings, sculptures, textile works and theatre. His paintings contain many playful and colourful organic forms. in his work you'll see basic colours as blue, green, red, black and yellow. The bright coloured surfaces are bordered or crossed by black lines. The unrealistic shapes, bright colours and lines resemble the work of children. Recurring themes are heavenly bodies and ladders. Many of the images in his paintings have eyes. In this way the work looks for direct eye contact with the one who looks at it.

Show several works of Miro on the digital board. Discuss the striking things: bright colours, many eyes, forms are bordered or crossed with black lines, different lines, different forms.

Tell the students about the difference between geometric forms (forms of mathematics, such as square, circle, triangle, etc) and organic forms (natural forms, free forms) and draw examples of them on the digital board. Discuss different line types and draw them on the board too.

The task is: draw an animal or a human being with waterproof black marker. Don't sketch first, draw directly with the marker! Your figure should consist of organic and / or geometric shapes. Divide large fields in forms or make them smaller with different lines. Colour your drawing with bright colours. Decorate the background with lines, shapes and coloured eyes. Paste the work finally on a coloured background.

Foodscape, like Carl Warner

You need:

  1. drawing paper A3 size
  2. (food) magazines
  3. scissors
  4. glue

The English photographer Carl Warner (click on this link and amaze yoourself!') is known for his terrific photos of landscapes who are made of food. Warner is born in Liverpool in 1963. He draws from childhood, creating imaginary worlds inspired on the artwork of Salvador Dali, Patrick Woodroofe and Roger Dean. Warner went to art academy to become an illustrator, but he realized soon that he could achieve his ideas better and faster by using photography. First he photographed landscapes, still lifes and people. Then he entered the world of advertising. He now designs and photographs food landscapes ('foodscapes') for companies in the food industry.

The ‘Foodscapes’ are made in Warner's studio in London. Warner works together with a stylist to search for the right food and to make the exposure and composition of the stuff. He works with layers, from background to foreground. Each element is then put together in post production to achieve the final image. “I tend to draw a very conventional landscape using classic compositional techniques as I need to fool the viewer into thinking it is a real scene at first glance, it is the realisation that the scene is in fact made of food that brings a smile that brings a smile to the viewer, and for me that’s the best part.”

Show several photo's of Warner's foodscapes on the digital board. Discuss those photo's: what do you see? What food do you recognize? Look especially to the photo with the rising sun: what food is used to suggest the sea? How come we sea salmon as the sea? What is the beach made of? And the mountains? After this children are going to make their own foodscape in the style of Carl Warner. Thye search for food in magazines and cut it out. Encourage children to consult each other. Sometimes you don't see anything special in a photograph, while your neighbour sees an interesting part of a landscape! Place the cut out parts on the sheet and slide it until you are satisfied and then paste all parts.

Chickens like Andy Warhol

You need:

  1. white drawing paper 21 by 14 cm
  2. markers
  3. piece of cardboard
  4. scissors
  5. pencil

Tell about Andy Warhol and show some of his artwork. 

Divide the sheet in six rectangles from 7 by 7 cm. Draw a chicken on cardboard and cut it out. Trace it six times. Colour everyting with markers in bright colours. Outline tall parts with a fine black marker. Draw legs and eyes.

Drawing with scissors, like Matisse

You need:
  1. white drawing paper A4 size
  2. coloured paper
  3. white sheet
  4. scissors and glue
Henri Matisse was the most important French painter of the 20th century, rivaling Picasso in his influence. His background was diverse. He studied under Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau and experimented with pointillism, which he found rigidly confining. Later, building on the work of Cézanne and Gauguin, he and Andre Derain developed Fauvism, a much freer and more expressive style of painting which was in fact the forerunner of expressionism. In the last years of his life Matisse can't paint anymore, and he focuses on cutting out shapes from painted paper. Show some works by Matisse zien, especially his cutting works, and discuss them. Tje artwork for this lesson is 'Polynesie la mer', a underwater scene in white, light and dark blue. What do you see in this artwork? What shapes have been used? Show the organic shapes. Are there any geometric shapes? Look at the white framework, as part of the artwork. What kind of shapes do you see? Why did Matisse choose these shapes? Distribute the supplies. Every child gets a white sheet of drawing paper, tho halves of coloured paper in the colours they choose and a white sheet of copy paper. Divide the coloured paper in four pieces, cut them and paste them on the white drawing sheet. Fold the copy paper and cut a frame with organic shapes. Cut water animals and plants out of the rest of the copy paper. Do'n draw first, cut directly. Arrange the several parts on your coloured sheet and paste them. Paste the frame carefully.

Beat the wall, like Thierry Noir

You need:
  1. white drawing paper A4 size
  2. markers
  3. black markers, thin and thick
  4. pictures of the artwork of Noir
Thierry Noir was born in 1958 in Lyon, France. He came to Berlin in January 1982, attracted by the music of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who lived in West Berlin at this time. From April 1984, Thierry Noir and Christophe Bouchet started to paint the Berlin Wall. He is an artist at the East Side Gallery. The object was not to embellish the wall but to demystify it. As the years went by, the paintings took on phenomenal proportions, which were rapidly recognized by the international arts community. The paintings of Thierry Noir became a symbol of new found freedom after the reunification of Germany and the end of the cold war.

Typical of Noir are bright coloured profiles, reduced to an icon with a big nose, thick lips and saucer-like eyes.

The East Side Gallery (see photo) is a 1.3 km long section of the wall near the center of Berlin and probably the largest open air gallery in the world. Here you'll find the work of Thierry Noir. After looking at pictures of the work of Thierry Noir, children have to get heads in the style of Noir. hoofden tekenen in de stijl van Noir: profile heads looking to the right or left. The sheet has to be filled completely. Choose three colours marker. Outline everything with a thick black marker. Colour the remaining white parts with another colour or fill the spaces with a pattern in thin marker.

Valentine's day (with Jim Dine)

You need:
  1. white paper 20 by 20 cm
  2. cardboard 10 by 10 cm
  3. pencil and ruler
  4. scissors
  5. glue
  6. colour pencils
  7. oil pastel crayons
  8. chalk pastel
  9. salt
  10. tempera paint
  11. different kinds of coloured paper (ribbed cardboard, tissue paper, crepe paper etc.)
  12. watercolour paint
  13. brushes
  14. markers
  15. red or pink paper for background
Jin Dine, born in 1935 in Cincinatti, is a sculptor and popart artist. Hearts, ties and tools are recurrent themes in his art. Let children learn about Jim Dine by showing and discussing his artworks. Because of upcoming Valentine's day a lesson about hearts today! Basic colours are red and white (and making pink of these of course!).
Children get a sheet from 20 by 20 cm. They have to divide this sheet with ruler and pencil into four squares from 10 by 10 cm. Fold the little cardboard and draw a heart against the fold. Cut it out. Trace this heart in the four squares. Divide the different colouring supplies on different tables. Stimulate children to experiment with these materials. What happens when I sprinkle salt in watercolour paint? How can I make my heart pop up from the paper? Can I combine chalk pastel and oilpastel? What happens when I sprinkle water on tissuepaper? Students have to colour their hearts and backgrounds by using as many supplies and techniques as possible. While doing this, kids may walk around through the classroom(s) and choose the place where the art supplies of their choice are. The only restriction is: when all chairs are occupied, you have to choose another supply first. When the four hearts are ready, they have to be pasted on a red or pink background.

Popart like Keith Haring


You need:

  1. white drawing paper
  2. markers
  3. black construction paper
Haring's works originated from the graffiti art and is distinguished by tight lines and the use of bright colours. Haring also worked iti with chalk on black painted plates and vases and statues. Haring has developed his own distinctive artistic language of symbols, symbols that almost look like icons.

 


Show some works of Haring.. On http://www.haring.com/ you'll find everything.
Discuss the distinctive features of the drawings of Haring: cartoon-like people, little details, often thick black lines and outlines, bright colors and little stripes to symbolize movement. Let the children create a drawing in the style of Haring. They have to omit many details as possible, and yet convey a certain feeling. Children have to remain a lahf centimeter of white around their drawing, just like Haring did. Paste the drawings on black construction paper and make sure the works are signed by the artists. Stained glass in Mondriaan style

You need:
  1. black construction paper 20 by 20 cm
  2. tissue paper in green, red and white
  3. white pencil
  4. ruler
  5. cutting blade
  6. cutting mat
  7. glue
Discuss stained glass. How did the craftspeople of yesterday make stained glass? How do they make it today? Show some paintings of Mondriaan. What colours did he use? What forms do you see? Children are going to make a little square or round stained glas window out of paper. The style must be like Mondriaan, colours must be like Christmas. Give each student one sheet of black construction paper. First children must choose their form. When they choose a round form, they have to draw a circle with compasses. Cut this out. Draw another circle about 1,5 cm out of the edges; this is the frame. Children who chose the square, draw also a line about 1,5 out of the edges. This is the frame. Draw squares and/or rectangles in your window using ruler and a white pencil. The lines must be 1 cm wide. When ready, draw crosses in the rectangles that have to be cut out.
Cut away the forms with the crosses. Cut carefully and use an iron ruler. Use your black window as a template to draw the forms of squares and rectangles on the three different colours of tissuepaper. Cut the forms out of the tissue paper with 0,5 cm extra for the adhesive border. Paste the colours alternately on the backside of your window.

Wrapped art, like Christo

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, Christo (1935-2020) worked on large art projects. His artistic strategy ais to wrap buildings or landscapes with fabrics. The wrapping of buildings or objects leads to the abstraction. 
Examples of his work are the wrapping of Pont Neuf in Paris (1985), the Reichstag in Berlin (1995) and The Gates in Central Park New York (2004). Christo wants his work to be seen by lots of people. The result is intended purely aesthetic. People will look at the environment "with new eyes". All work from Christo is to be seen on his website.

Wrapping like Christo

Ask students to take an object from home that:

  1. is larger than a soda can;
  2. fits on a table;
  3. is not breakable;
  4. is not expensive;
  5. may stay in school for some days;
  6. has a particular form (not just a box)

Discuss with the children why people wrap things: to protect, to surprise (presents), to ship. Why has Christo wrapped things? What is the effect of the wrapped objects? Look at some Christo projects and discuss them.

You need:

  1. an object for each kid
  2. big fabrics, pieces of plastic, garbage bags, wrapping papier, toilet paper, aluminum foil and plastic wrap
  3. materials to tie, like rope, yarn, tape, wire, fishing line, painter tape and fabric strips
  4. materials to decorate, like feathers, paint, markers, coloured paper, textile markers, glitter glue, buttons etc.
The goal for today: wrap your object to hide details; tie it, to make the form visible again. When your ready earlier than others, you may decorate your artwork using different materials. When children go to work, walk around and stimulate them. Each kid wraps in his own way, nothing is wrong. Stay mentioning the goal: wrap to let disappear details, tie to recognize the form again. When everybody is ready and the classroom is tidy again, ask children to exhibit their work. Are the goals achieved? Finally children make some digital photo's of their own work.
