Winter mittens and cap

What do you need?

• colored construction paper
• markers
• white sheet
• glue
• scissors
• oil pastel

What should you do?

1. Draw a face and color it with oil pastels. Be sure the eyes are not on top of the head, but in the middle. The space between the two eyes is as wide as an eye.
2. Cut mittens and a hat from colored paper (or trace templates first and cut them). 
3. Draw patterns on hat and mittens with a marker. The patterns on both mittens should be similar, as well as the patterns on the hat.
4. Paste hat and mittens on the drawing. Make sure the thumbs point to each other!

Snowman close ups

What do you need?

• grey drawing paper 15 by 15 cm
• oil pastels
• glue
• scissors
• colored construction paper for background 

What should you do?

1. Take three pieces of grey drawing paper. 
2. Draw a snowman's face or part of the face from different points of view: frontal, of the side, from above, from the bottom, upside down etc. 
3. Color with oil pastels. Of course the colors of all drawings have to be the same. 
4. Outline everything with black oil pastel.
5. Pate the close ups on a colored background.

Stormy winter night

Inspired by Vincent van Gogh's painting Starry Night students make their own stormy winter night! 

What do you need? 

• drawing sheet 
• pencil
• oil pastels 
• liquid watercolor paint
• brush

What should you do? 

1. Lay the drawing sheet widthwise in front of you.
2. Draw the head of a surprised looking snowman's in the corner. 
3. Draw his scarf fluttering in the wind.
4. Draw his blown-off hat floating through the air.  
5. Color everything with oil pastels
   
6. Draw spiral shapes in the air with oil pastels. 
7. Paint the drawing with liquid watercolor but leave the edges white.

Come on, let's make a snowman!

In advance: 

By choosing an incomplete snowman, students are forced to draw big. An additional advantage is that there remains some to imagine: what would your snowman look like if he filled the complete sheet?

Students have to start coloring with white. This is to prevent other colors will mix with white and to be sure the white crayons will remain white! 

What do you need?

• blue construction paper 
• oil pastels
• pencil
• white tempera
• stencil brush

What should you do?

1. Sketch a part of a snowman. 
2. Sketch the hat and scarf and other items too. 
3. Color the drawing, starting with white oil pastel. 
4. Outline everything with black oil pastel. 
5. Make snowflakes around the snowman with white tempera paint and a stencil brush.

Snowmen mandala

What do you need?

• white drawing sheet 
• compasses
• scissors 
• crayons or oil pastels 
• indian ink
• brush

What should you do?

Step 1

1. Draw a circle with a diameter of 20 cm. 
2. Draw within about 1 cm another circle (the edge of the mandala). 
3. Cut out and fold into 8 pieces. 
4. Draw against one of the folds half of a snowman using black oil pastel/crayon.
5. Fold the sheet and press firmly with your hands to get a print of the snowman on the other side of the fold. 
6. Trace this half with black oil pastel/crayon.
7. Repeat this and draw the other three snowmen. 
8. Color the snowmen and background. 
   
9. Make sure the snowmen are really colored white, otherwise they will turn completely black with ink after step 2.
10. Color the edge with a nice pattern.

Step 2

1. Crumple the picture into a ball. 
2. Make flat again. 
3. Paint the entire drawing with indian ink. Rinse the ink immediately after it in the sink. 
4. Let dry. The ink will rest in the folds and create a great antique effect.
5. Cut the circle and paste it on a colored background.

Catching snowflakes

 

What do you need?

• blue or grey construction paper
• oilpastel crayons
• fiberfill 
• glue

What should you do you?

It's snowing! Look up and try to catch snowflakes with you tongue! What does your face look like when you look up?

1. Draw yourself or another child in a winter sweater. 
2. Color with oil pastels. 
3. Outline with black. 
4. Paste a piece of fiberfill on the tongue.  
5. Draw the snowflakes.

Snowmen

What do you need?

• blue construction paper

What should you do?

1. Draw three or more overlapping snowmen wearing colorful scarves. 
2. Color with oil pastel.
3. Outline with black.
4. Draw snowflakes around the snowmen.

Winter tree in warm-cool colors

 What do you need?

• drawing paper
• crayons
• watercolor paint
• black tempera

• jar with water

What should you do?

1. With crayon: draw a horizon line.
2. Draw a tree trunk from the bottom of the sheet. 
3. Draw branches that touch the edges of the sheet. 
4. Draw a pattern in the landscape below the horizon line. 
5. With watercolor paint: paint the sky. 
6. Paint the surfaces between the branches in warm or cool colors. 
7. Paint the surfaces in the landscape: warm if you first chose cool, cool if you first chose warm. 
8. With tempera: paint the branches and trunk black.

Christmas trees in the snow

What do you need?

• large drawing sheets 
• liquid watercolor green and red 
• oilpastel crayons 
• brushes
  

What should you do ?

• Draw a wavy line, the ground. 
• Draw several christmas trees. Simple triangles are okay. 
• Do not draw all the trees next to each other, but let them overlap. 
• Decorate the trees with balls and garlands.
• Draw presents under the trees. 
• Color with oil pastels, but leave the ground white. 
• Use white oilpastel for snowflakes.
• Paint with liquid watercolor, the ground has to stay white.

Scratch a Christmas ball

What do you need?

1. drawing sheet
2. oil pastels or crayons
3. black tempera paint 
4. brush
5. aluminium foil 
6. ribbon
7. toothpick or skewer

What should you do?

1. Color the sheet with crayons. 
2. Paint it over with black tempera paint and let dry. 
3. Scratch with a toothpick a Christmas ball and fill it with patterns. 
4. Cut a small piece of aluminium foil and paste it on the ball with a folded ribbon under it.

Catching leaves

You need:

1. white drawing sheet A3 size
2. oil pastels
3. liquid water color paint
4. brushes

What should you do?

• Trace your hand (thumbs point to each other) on the bottom of the sheet.
• Color them with oil pastels. 
• Draw some swirling autumn leaves above the hands and color them with oil pastels. 
• Paint the background with diluted liquid water color paint leaving some space on the edges.
• Variant: choose real autumn leaves instead of drawn ones. Stick them on the drawing AFTER painting and drying the background.

Autumn leaves mandala

You need:

1. white drawing sheet A4 size
2. compasses
3. pencil
4. oil pastels

Draw a circle with a diameter of 20 cm. Draw within about 1 cm another circle (the edge of the mandala). Cut out and fold into 8 pieces. Draw against one of the folds half of an autumn leaf using black oil pastel.

Fold the sheet and press firmly with the hands to get a print of the leaf on the other side of the fold. Trace this half with black oilpastel. Repeat this and draw the other three leaves. Colour the leaves and background with oil pastels in warm colours. Colour the edge with a nice pattern.

Sunflowers in pieces

Celebrate end of summer by tearing your sunflower artwork in pieces!

This lesson shows we can do more with our artworks dan stick them on a colored background. Pretty scary to tear or cut your drawing, but the effect is great! 

You need: 

1. white drawing sheet 
2. black construction paper for background 
3. pencil
4. oilpastels
5. liquid water color paint
6. brush
7. scissors
8. glue

Draw at least four sunflowers. Be sure three of them are over  the edges.  Color them with oilpastels. Paint the backgrond with liquid water color paint. 

Neil's drawing is torn in pieces. Those pieces have been re-glued for a spatial effect. Before tearing check which side of the paper is best. One side gives nice white tear lines, the other side does not.

Monet's waterlilies pond

 You need:

1. drawing paper A3 size
2. tempera paint in green, blue, white, red and yellow
3. two brushes per student
4. two spunges per student
5. paper towels
6. oil pastel crayons 
7. schotels  

Claude Monet (1840-1926) is considered one of the most important painters of Impressionism. 

 Typical for Impressionists:

• they choose subjects from ordinary life 
• special attention for light and color
• work in the open air
• smooth brushstrokes
• dashes resemble a sketch
• it's about the impression!

Discuss the term impressionism. Show some paintings by Monet and zoom in on a work with water lilies in Arts & Culture. Do students see the characteristics of impressionism in this artwork?

Monet had a large garden with a pond and a Japanese bridge in Giverny France. He liked to paint in that garden. His works of water lilies are therefore famous and are the basis of this lesson.

Lesson 1

Squeeze some blue, green and white paint onto a saucer. Dipt your sponge into the blue paint. Stamp on the sheet. Do the same with green paint and stamp all over the sheet. Finally do this with white paint. You can use the green side of your sponge,  to get a light green color also. Let the work dry.

Lesson 2

To paint the water lilies: mix a little bit of red with white paint. Paint ovals spread across the sheet. Not too neat, it's all about impression!

Paint a green border at the bottom of the ovals: the leaf. To make it fresher, you can mix some light green paint and use it. You don't have to clean the green brush first. 

Then paint a heart in your flower with yellow. Let the work dry. 

Finally draw lines in your lily with a dark red or purple oil pastel: the petals.

April showers will bring us flowers

You need:

1. white drawing sheet
2. water colour paint
3. ruler
4. white crayon or oil pastel
5. paint brush
6. water

Characteristicly Dutch weather in spring is a weather type with showers, alternated with sunny periods. We call those typical spring showers 'Maartse buien' (March Showers), while English meteorologists speak about 'April showers who bring us flowers'. 

In this lesson children draw spring flowers (tulips, daffodils etc.) during a rain shower.

 
Sketch some spring flowers on a white sheet. Make sure your lines are extremely thin. Use your ruler to draw white crayon lines with one centimeter between them. Make sure your crayon has a sharp point. Paint your drawing with watercolour paint. Use a lot of water to make bright colours. The crayon will resist the water paint, so your shower will be very clear!

Animals in spring like Hans Innemee

This lesson is for grade 1-2. In 2012 I wrote a lesson for grade 3-4 about Hans Innemee.

Task for today: draw young animals in spring. Color them with oilpastels. Outline with black around the drawing. 

One pumpkin, four materials

You need:

1. drawing sheet

Fold the sheet in four. Draw 4 pumpkins. Color them with different materials.

Towards the end of the Golden Age, the Netherlands are at war with England, a battle that is being fought at sea. 

In this lesson students draw a sea ship from that time. 

Study paintings of ships in a battle. What stands out? How do you recognize the Dutch and English ships? Which flags do you see more? What do you see in the foreground of the first painting? What can you tell about the sails? How can you see those ships are in combat?

What should you do?

Step 1

First you paint the background on the largest sheet with liquid water color paint. At the bottom (near by) the water is dark, further away it becomes lighter (add water). 

Step 2

Draw on the A4 sheet a VOC-ship with oil pastel and color it. Draw and color extra things which you also see in the water during a naval battle, such as fire,, aa life boat, an anchor etc. Do not forget tho color the sails white!

Step 3

Paint your drawing with blue water color paint. Wipe the excess paint off the white sails with a paper towel. Let dry. 

Step 4

Cut out all parts, leaving a blue edge. Stick ice cream sticks behind the loose parts. Take the large blue painted sheet and decide where you want hour ship and the other things. Cut slices of about 3 cm in this sheet. Insert the sticks into the background and the artwork is done.
