Haunted house in the moonlight


You need:
  1. white drawing sheet A4 size 
  2. black construction paper
  3. yellow chalk pastel
  4. scissors
  5. cutting knife
  6. glue
  7. white pencil
  8. black marker
  9. blue and purple tempera paint
  10. sponge
  11. saucer
This lesson is all about Halloween and haunted houses. 

What to do? 
  • Tear a strip of black paper from about 5 cm and paste it on the bottom of the white sheet: the ground. 
  • Draw a old house on black paper and cut out.
  • Use a cutting knife for doors and windows. 
  • Paste the house on the white sheet. 
  • Use a white pencil for details such as bricks, ghosts, spiders, spider webs etc. Use a black marker to draw things in the open window.
  • Cut and paste a moon. 
  • Outline moon and house with yellow chalk pastel and smudge the chalk outwards. 
  • Stamp the background with purple and blue tempera and a sponge. 
  • Finally paste the artwork on a yellow background sheet.

Stamping with Mondrian


Goal:
 reducing the visible world in horizontal and vertical lines and primatr colors.   
Technique: stamping. 

You need:
  1. black cardboard 
  2. sponges cut in different sizes (squares and rectangles) 
  3. tempera paint in red, blue and yellow 
  4. brushes
  5. white crayons 
View these artworks of Mondrian and talk about how he abstracted a tree. 

Also talk about Victory Boogie Woogie, the painting in which you can see part of the map of New York. Tell students we are going to make our own Mondrian map. Discuss the terms primary colors, square, rectangle, vertical and horizontal lines.


Instruction 
Brushes will not be rinsed, but will remain the same color.
Show how to use a brush to rub the sponge with paint. 
Show how to stamp: do not slide the sponge, but lift it off the paper. This way you'll get a tight shape.  
Stamp horizontally or vertically only. 
Do not stamp two of the same colors next to each other. 
Make sure the shapes don't touch each other. You must be able to see the black roads between them. 


When the work had dried, draw stripes on the black roads using a white crayon.

Mexican amate

You need:
  1. brown paper bag
  2. tempera paint in fluoresecent colours and white
  3. brushes
  4. jar with water
  5. black marker
  6. coloured paper for background
  7. glue or stapler
Amate is a way of making paper, done for centuries by Mexican Indians. Amate paper is made by cooking the inner bark of various trees. At the beginning of the 20th century the Nahua Indians of Mexico started making amate paintings as a form of folk art, especially in order to exchange and sell them to tourists.
Show some pictures of Mexican amate paintings. Discuss the features: birds, flowers, bright colours and black outlines. A frame around the drawing with a pattern in bright colours too.

Tear the edges off the paper: use thumb and fingers of both hands and tear slowly. Use a pencil to draw some birds and flowers, add a patterned frame and paint everything with fluorescent tempera. Let dry and outline everything with a black marker. 

Paste or staple the artworks on coloured construction paper.

Tamponing an Easter bunny

 You need:

  1. colored paper
  2. tamponing brushes 
  3. white tempera paint
  4. pencil and color pencils  

A lesson to learn the technique of tamponing with a tamponing brush: do not move the brush back and forth, but stamp. Result will be a softer texture than when using normal brushes.  


No tamponing brushes in school? Give students a cotton ball in a cloth spin. 


What to do?
Scetch the outline of an Easter bunny. Press the pencil as gently as you can, to avoid thick pencil lines under the white paint. 
Stamp the bunny and let dry. 
Draw the outlines with a blak pencil. 
Draw small lines all around with a black pencil. 
Decorate the artwork with spring flowers.

A field full of daisies

Made by a student of grade 5

You need:
  1. white drawing sheet A3 size
  2. tempera paint in blue, green, white, yellow and red
  3. egg boxes or saucers
  4. brushes
  5. jars with water
  6. newspapers
  7. paper towels
  8. coloured paper for background
Daisies (bellis perennis) are, until it freezes, found in lawns. View pictures of daisies and discuss what they look like. 
Students start to paint the grass. They have to make their own green colors by mixing blue, white and yellow. Paint the entire sheet with small vertical strokes and let dry.

Then the daisies can be painted. In the front of the field daisies are larger  then further away. Use a small brush and a lot of paint, to make sure the green grass is really covered with the white paint of the flower. Use a different color green for the stalks or take the unmixed color green directly from the bottle. Paint the hearts of the flowers with big yellow blobs.
Paste the artwork on a matching background.

Cherry blossom tree

You need:

  1. drawing sheet
  2. tempera paint in red and white 
  3. crayons
  4. liquid water color paint
  5. brush
  6. broccoli 

Step 1
Draw a tree with crayon.  


Step 2
Paint the background with diluted liquid water color paint and let dry.  


Stap 3
Stamp blossom with pieces of broccoli.

Painting without using your hands

 


You need: 

  1. big drawing sheets
  2. brushes
  3. tempera paint
  4. liquid water color paint
  5. tape

Painting without using your hands is quite a challenge! You can paint with your feet or mouth. We tried both. 

Painting with your feet
Put tables aside, newspapers on the floor and stick drawing sheets on top. Very important: take off the shoes in the hallway and leave them there 😀

Place a container with three colors tempera paint between two students. A beautiful portrait is too much, so ask them to paint simple lines or shapes. 

Painting with your mouth 
This is less difficult. Cover the tables with newspapers. Place jars with diluted water color paint and brushes. Students may paint what the want. You may also give them a simple goal: paint rectangles in different colors.

Landscape like Ton Schulten


You need:

  1. drawing sheet 
  2. tempera paint in primary colors, black and white  
  3. ruler
  4. pencil
  5. brushes
Ton Schulten (1938) is a Dutch painter, born and living in the small town Ootmarsum. He worked as a graphic designer and decided in 1989 to devote himself entirely to painting. His main source of inspiration is the landscape of Twente, a region in the east of Holland. This is a semi-open landscape that, due to the planting of hedges and wooded banks, looks like a stage with wings.  

Show artworks from Ton Schulten and discuss them.
  • Schulten's use of colors  
  • horizon line
  • the 'curtains' on the sides - the picture is darker there than in the middle
  • simple shapes
  • divided in rectangles

What should you do? 
You're going to draw a landscape like Ton Schulten. First draw a horizon line on about half of the sheet. Draw one or some simple houses. Then draw some draw trees. Divide the drawing with horizontal and vertical lines into small rectangles.  
Paint the rectangles with tempera. Mix your own colors, starting with the brightest one. For example: start with white and add a drop of blue to get light blue; add more drops to get a darker blue.  
Perhaps you can draw 'curtains', just like Ton Schulten: the sides are darker than those in the center.

Autumn birches


You need: 

  1. drawing sheets A3 size
  2. painters tape in several widths
  3. liquid watercolor paint in red, green and yellow in rood, geel en groen
  4. brushes
  5. tempera paint  
  6. stipple brush
  7. old shopping card/customer card
  8. saucers
  9. jars
Choose thick drawing paper,  to avoid ripping when you remove the tape . 

Look at birch trees. What do you see?   
 

  • straight trunks
  • trunks are white
  • horizontal peeling bark banden
  • autumn color leaves: orange, yellow, brown, red
What to do?

Step 1
Palce the sheet on the table with the narrow site down.  Stick strips of tape from top to bottom. Wide for the trunks, narrower for the branches. Note: branches grow up and not down. 


Step 2
Paint the background in strips with diluted liquid watercolor. Let dry. Peel off the tape carefully. 

Step 3
Put some black tempera paint on a saucer. Dip your customer card in the paint. Pull this in several places from left to right (or right to left!) to halfway up the trunk to make the black streaks.

  
Step 4
Spray som warm colors tempera + green on a saucer.  Stipple leaves at the top of the trees using the stipple brush. Do not mix the colors, but use several colors at the brush at the same time.  


Step 5
Hang up!

On Monet's bridge


You need: 

  1. drawing sheet A3 size
  2. tempera paint
  3. brushes
  4. white construction paper
  5. scissors
  6. oilpastels
  7. glue

 Typical for Impressionists:

  • they choose subjects from ordinary life 
  • special attention for light and color
  • work in the open air
  • smooth brushstrokes
  • dashes resemble a sketch
  • it's about the impression!
Discuss the term impressionism. Show some paintings by Monet and zoom in on a work with water lilies in Arts & Culture. Do students see the characteristics of impressionism in this artwork?

Monet had a large garden with a pond and a Japanese bridge in Giverny France. He liked to paint in that garden. His works of water lilies are therefore famous and are the basis of this lesson.


Lesson 1
Draw a horizon line above the middle of your sheet. Paint the pond and the sky with short brush strokes, like Monet did. Do not mix the paint, but take two colors on your brush.  Make sure the blue color of the pond is not the same color as the sky.
Paint trees on both sides of the sheet in the same way. Paint water lilies in the pond. Be sure that they are larger in the front of the pond than in the back.  

Lesson 2
Have someone take a picture of you that shows you all the way. Print the photo and cut it out. 
Cut three parallel arcs from about 1,5 cm wide from the construction paper.  Then cut four straight pieces of 1,5 cm wide. Paste the photo on the work and paste the bridge over it.

Starry Night like Vincent van Gogh

The artwork students are going to make, will take two lessons.  

You need for the 1st lesson:
  1. black construction paper 
  2. aluminium foil
  3. piece of cardboard or a clay plate
  4. painter's tape
  5. tempera paint in blue and white 
  6. cotton swab
  7. brushes
  8. plate

Lesson 1
Wrap the cardboard/clay plate with aluminum foil and tape it on the back side. 

Step 1: For each pair of students there is a palette with blue and white paint. Students paint spiral shapes ons the aluminum foil with a brush and / or cotton swabs.


Stap 2: Make a print by placing a black sheet on top of your painting and pressing it.  

Stap 3: Remove the black sheet and let dry. 


 You need for the 2nd lesson:

  1. oilpastels in black, grey and purple
  2. tempera paint in yellow and white 
  3. black construction papier
  4. brushes
  5. scissors
  6. glue
  7. plate
Step 4: Draw and color the mountains with oilpastels. Draw the wavy movements in the air. The lines must run parallel to each other and also go in the same direction during a movement.
Show students that you can fade the colors by smearing the oil pastel. This way you can also make the colors darker or lighter.


Step 5: Determine where the large dark cypress should be and cut it out of black paper. (In grade 3 we gave students a shape to trace for the cypress.)


Step 6: Cut houses and glue them on tje painting. Draw lighted windows with oilpastels.  


Step 7: Paint moon and stars with tempera.

Water lilies on a plate

You need:
  1. paper plates
  2. tempera paint in blue and white 
  3. stencil brush
  4. white drawing sheet 
  5. tissue paper in green an light green 
  6. water and sponge
  7. tissue paper in pink and yellow
  8. mold of a water lily leaf
  9. glue
  10. scissors
Step 1:
Dab the plate with blue and white.  


Step 2:
Wet the white paper with a sponge. Cut squares from the green tissue paper. Place them on the wet paper and let the bleed. Let dry.

 

Step 3
Remove the tissue paper. Trace the mold of the lilyflower leaf and cut it out.  


Step 4
Fold the tissuepaper for the lily twice diagonally. Cut a flower shape. 


Step 5
Grab the flower shapes in the middle. Crumple them into a flower. Put a drop of glue on the lily leaf and stick the center of the lily on top. Roll a wad of leftover tissue paper and stick it in the center of the flower.
