Redecorate your chair

You need:

  1. wooden chair for each student or one chair for two students
  2. water-based paint in various colours
  3. paint trays
  4. paint rollers
  5. brushes
  6. sandpaper
  7. ammonia
  8. newspapers

Redecorating chairs is a nice activity for older kids. Ask students to bring an old wooden chair or buy some old ones in a recycle store. Discuss how to redecorate a chair. How do you manage that? Do you choose a theme, for instance flowers or sports, or do you want to decorate it with motives? You can even choose an artist. How about a Keith Haring chair, or a Piet Mondrian table? What colours do you use? How do you draw the design on the chair? Just drawing or is it better to use a template?

Create a design on paper, on which you see colours and patterns / designs clearly. 

Put the chairs on newspapers. Sand the chair and make it completely greaseproof with a cloth and ammonia water. Let dry. Draw the design first with pencil and paint it. 

The table below is redecoratied by a group of students. For the tabletop they used chalkboard paint. This table is still in our classroom as an instruction table. Useful, because we can write on it!

Design your own board game

You need:

  1. coloured cardboard
  2. coloured paper
  3. clay
  4. scissors
  5. glue
  6. laminator
  7. markers
  8. various materials

Truth or dare

At the end of elementary school, in our Dutch group 8, when musical stress strikes (every group 8 in Holland ends its elementary school career by performing a musical) and motivation to learn decreases, making your own board game is a great job. In groups of two or three students invent a game , complete with all attributes and a set of rules.

CASH!

First, I let the children think about the basics of their game. Then I ask those groups to make a list of the materials they need. Cardboard? Paper? Colours? Sizes? The teacher ensures that all materials are in the group, as far as possible. Maybe children will also want to bring things from home.

After drawing, cutting, pasting, writing and colouring, question cards can be laminated. And if all games are ready and everybody's game has been admired, the games must be playedof! Always a successful lesson!

Inchies

Inchies are small matching artworks that make one artwork together. The name is derived from the original size of the inchie, one inch (2.54 cm). By choosing a theme, a material or a colour, you ensure that your inchies match nicely together. Inchies can also be used to learn certain skills, like embroidery or sew on a button. Variatons are endless.
The base is an MDF board or canvas on a frame. The inchies are cut (measure carefully) from a shoebox lid or other cardboard and then covered with coloured paper or fabric. Little things have to be pasted or sewn on these squares.The inchies are pasted on the background with double-sided tape.
Of course those squares don't really have to be an inch. Let the size depend from the size of the background. All examples in this lesson are made on a canvas frame from 20 by 20 cm with squares from 4 by 4 cm.

This artwork is made on a canvas frame. It is covered with white wallpaper. The squares are covered with different kinds of wallpaper too (ask for a pattern book in the wallpaper store). Different things in matching coloures are pasted on the inchies.

On the artwork above you'll see inchies that are covered with different materials: wallpaper, lunchbag paper, embroidery linen, rope and teddybear fabric. Skills that are practiced: embroidery, sewing a button and wire wrapping.

This artwork's theme is 'shells'. The variation lies in the background here: ribbed cardboard, painted sandpaper, plastic, wrinkled paper, fleece line etc. A list of things you need isn't easy to give! Ask children to take things from home to paste or sew on their inchies. Ask a patternbook in a wallpaper store for nice backgrounds.
Basic supplies:
  1. mdf board or canvas frame
  2. shoebox lid or some other cardboard
  3. ruler and pencil
  4. scissors and glue
  5. several sorts of paper and/or fabric
  6. doublesided tape
  7. decoration supplies
  8. needle and thread
By letting kids make one or more inchies in a specific theme or colour, you'll make a terrific group work!

Carnival portraits

You need:
  1. a shelf
  2. balloon
  3. newspaper strips
  4. wallpaper paste
  5. toilet rolls, bottle caps, polystyrene etc.
  6. toilet paper or paper towels
  7. acrylic paint or tempera paint
  8. brushes
  9. glitter
  10. confetti
  11. black marker

Blow the balloon. Paste newspaper strips on the half of the ballon. Be sure you have at least eight layers. Let the work dry. Take the balloon uit. Cut the edges and lay this half balloon on the shelf. Use costless things like toilet rolls, bottle caps or polystyrene to shape the face. Fix these parts with newspaper strips and wallpaper paste. The last layer has to be toilet paper or paper towel. Let the work dry again. Paint the portrait with acrylic paint or undiluted tempera. Give the face a body. Sprinkle glitter or confetti in the wet paint.

Design your own clock!

You need:
  1. plywood plate
  2. coping saw
  3. sandpaper
  4. carbon paper
  5. pencil
  6. clock
  7. tempera paint
  8. brush
  9. things to symbolize figures
  10. picture hook
Children first make a design for their clock on paper. With carbon paper this design has to be copied on the jigsaw. Saw the clock and sand it smooth. Don't forget the edges. Paint the clock with tempera. Paste figures or other things to symbolize the figures on your clock. Fix a hook on the backside and hang your clock.
All clocks are made by students of 11-12 years old.

Winter scene

I got this lesson from Anneriek Adema. Her students (11-12 years old) made this wonderful winter scenes! You need:
  1. wc role
  2. coloured paper
  3. glue
  4. scissors
  5. polystyrene
  6. wire, sticks etc.

The wc role is the basis for a snowman, skiing person, ice skater or something. Use coloured paper to make a person, and place him on a piece of polystyrene. Use different materials to make an environment.

This lesson can also be used to make a group work. Give every group a larger piece of polystyrene and let them discuss about what they are going to make.

Colourful dog

You need:
  1. newspapers torn in strips
  2. wallpaper paste
  3. toilet paper or paper towels
  4. tempera paint
  5. brushes
  6. black marker
  7. varnish

There are many tutorials in the internet about paper mache. Search for 'how to make paper mache'. In this lesson we made doggies from paper mache. After drying the dogs are painted with tempera in bright colours. Use a black marker to outline the patterns. Finish the dog with transparent varnish.

Tealight holder with glass paint

Made by students from 11 years old

You need:

  1. used jar or small drinking glass
  2. glass paint
  3. outline paste in gold
  4. brushes
  5. turpentine
Wash your jar in hot, soapy water and remove any labels. Dry the jar completely. Cover your work surface with newspapers and have whatever cleaning solution you'll need for your brushes already set up. If you're going to do an outline, test the outline paste before you start, to learn how much pressure you need to apply to get it to come out evenly from the tube. If you make a mistake with either the outline paste or the paints, it's easy to correct by wiping it off with a paper towel before it dries. Paint your outline first. If you're working from an existing pattern, you can tape the paper pattern on the inside of the jar and follow it from the outside. Or, you can work freehand. Let the outline dry according to directions, then paint with transparent glass paints. Hold the jar up to the light periodically to see how it looks. It'll look different with the light coming through it. Allow your design to dry thoroughly (this usually takes about two days). To turn your glass jar into a lantern, put a layer of sand on the bottom and add a tea light.

Fireworks rockets

Fireworks, by children from 11-12 years old

You need:

  1. tubes from Pringles
  2. long wooden stick
  3. construction paper in different colours
  4. scissors
  5. glue
  6. wide tape
  7. wire
Paste black paper around the tube. Decorate the rocket with stars, dots etc. cut out of coloured paper. Make a cap from a circle and paste it on the rocket. Fix the stick in the tube with wide tape. Take small tape to fix a piece of wire in the tube; this is the sliver.

Christmas carolers

You need:
  1. green construction paper A2 size
  2. scissors and glue
  3. leftovers paper or Christmas scrapbook paper
  4. fine marker in black and silver
A Christmas Carol is a book from the English writer Charles Dickens, which tells about an old and bitter mister Scrooge. Scrooge is a banker and money changer whose only goal is to get more and more money. He hates friendship, love and the meaning of Christmas. Just before Christmas he has a number of dreams in which spirits make him change his mind.

This art project is about the Christmas carolers; the singers who sing their typical English Christmas songs under the streetlights in cold and snowy villages. Children cut the parts of the singers: head (mouth open, nose up!), legs and arms (thin!), dress or suit, shoes (old fashioned, like lace-up boots) and of course the music book with the title Christmas Carols and some staves. Glue the different parts on a large piece of paper. Paste threedimensional if possible: paste the dress with folds, the arms have to come out of the sleeves and are pasted on the 3D pasted music book. Use a fine marker for the nostrils and a silver one for the shoe laces.

Make a large group work of these Christmas carolers!

Tea light holder of paper, ink and oil!

This beautiful coloured light holders are made of just paper, ink and salad oil! You need:
  1. sketch paper
  2. pattern (click on the word to download)
  3. liquid watercolour
  4. great brush
  5. scissors
  6. strong glue
  7. salad oil
  8. paper towels
  9. little glass jar
  10. tea light

Download the pattern of this light holder and copy it on scetch paper. Make the paper wet and leave with a big brush liquid water colour on the sheet. Those drops will flow in the water. Fill the whole sheet with colour. Leave work to dry. Do some salad oil on a plate and take a big brush. Paint the whole sheet with salad oil. Let it dry for one day. The oily sheet can best put between paper towels. Cut out the pattern. Fold the seams and adhesive borders and glue the light holder with strong glue.

Wrapped art, like Christo

A wrapped globe

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, Christo (1935-2020) worked on large art projects. His artistic strategy ais to wrap buildings or landscapes with fabrics. The wrapping of buildings or objects leads to the abstraction. 
Examples of his work are the wrapping of Pont Neuf in Paris (1985), the Reichstag in Berlin (1995) and The Gates in Central Park New York (2004). Christo wants his work to be seen by lots of people. The result is intended purely aesthetic. People will look at the environment "with new eyes". All work from Christo is to be seen on his website.

Wrapping like Christo

Ask students to take an object from home that:

  1. is larger than a soda can;
  2. fits on a table;
  3. is not breakable;
  4. is not expensive;
  5. may stay in school for some days;
  6. has a particular form (not just a box)

Discuss with the children why people wrap things: to protect, to surprise (presents), to ship. Why has Christo wrapped things? What is the effect of the wrapped objects? Look at some Christo projects and discuss them.

A wrapped easel

You need:

  1. an object for each kid
  2. big fabrics, pieces of plastic, garbage bags, wrapping papier, toilet paper, aluminum foil and plastic wrap
  3. materials to tie, like rope, yarn, tape, wire, fishing line, painter tape and fabric strips
  4. materials to decorate, like feathers, paint, markers, coloured paper, textile markers, glitter glue, buttons etc.
The goal for today: wrap your object to hide details; tie it, to make the form visible again. When your ready earlier than others, you may decorate your artwork using different materials. When children go to work, walk around and stimulate them. Each kid wraps in his own way, nothing is wrong. Stay mentioning the goal: wrap to let disappear details, tie to recognize the form again. When everybody is ready and the classroom is tidy again, ask children to exhibit their work. Are the goals achieved? Finally children make some digital photo's of their own work.

Fruit

You need:

  1. wallpaper paste
  2. newspaper strips
  3. toilet paper or paper towels
  4. magazines
From paper mache you can make a nice fruit basket. Start with a wad of newspaper and paste newspaper strips around it. Use enough glue, so the work is so wet that you can make figures out of it. Make the last layer of toilet paper and make it smooth.
Tear small pieces of coloured paper from magazines in the color of your fruit and glue them around. Use different shades within one color.

After drying, paint the fruit with varnish.

Blouse of clay

Blouses of clay by students of grade 6

You need:
  1. clay
  2. clay tools
  3. clay boards
Bring a blouse in the classroom and show kids how it has to be folded. Ask children to try it themselves. Look at the folded blouse and discuss what parts of the blouse are still to be seen (collar, buttons, pocket, the folds on the side) and the parts that are hidden now. Give each child a ball of clay. Their task is to make a folded blouse out of one piece of clay. Except the buttons no part may be sticked, everything has to be made out of one ball of clay. Be sure kids scretch their name in a label in the back of the collar. After the baking process, the blouses can be painted with tempera and lacked with vernish.
