Stamping with Mondrian

Goal:
reducing the visible world in horizontal and vertical lines and primatr colors.
Technique: stamping.

You need:
  1. black cardboard
  2. sponges cut in different sizes (squares and rectangles)
  3. tempera paint in red, blue and yellow
  4. brushes
  5. white crayons
View these artworks of Mondrian and talk about how he abstracted a tree.

Also talk about Victory Boogie Woogie, the painting in which you can see part of the map of New York. Tell students we are going to make our own Mondrian map. Discuss the terms primary colors, square, rectangle, vertical and horizontal lines.

Instruction
Brushes will not be rinsed, but will remain the same color.
Show how to use a brush to rub the sponge with paint.
Show how to stamp: do not slide the sponge, but lift it off the paper. This way you'll get a tight shape.
Stamp horizontally or vertically only.
Do not stamp two of the same colors next to each other.
Make sure the shapes don't touch each other. You must be able to see the black roads between them.

When the work had dried, draw stripes on the black roads using a white crayon.

Elements of art: shape, color, line.

Artworks are made by students of grade 1/2.

Sailboat regatta

You need:
  1. two sheets of white drawing paper
  2. sandpaper
  3. tempera paint in blue, green and white
  4. brush
  5. coloured paper
  6. brown paper (grocery bag)
  7. glue
  8. blue paper A1 size
Spray paint stripes in blue, green and white on a saucer. Lay a sheet of white drawing paper before you, with the small size up. Paint it with coloured waves. Don't mix the colours on the saucer, but dip the brush in two or three colours. Leave the sheet to dry.
Take the second white sheet and lay it before you with the small side up. Cut a piece of sandpaper as wide as the sheet and 8 cm high. Paste the sandpaper on the bottom of the sheet.
Tear the painted sheet in wavy strips. Tear the straight sides of the first and last strip too, so that all strips have two wavy sides.
Place the strips overlapping on the white sheet. Start below. Place the second strip partly under the first one, the third under the second etc. Paste down the short sides of the waves on the left and right.
Cut boats out of a brown paper bag; bigger ones below, smaller ones at the top (perspective). Cut masts out of the paper bag and sails out of coloured paper. Paste the boats between the waves and paste the long sides of the waves at the same time. Paste sails and masts on the boats.
Paste or staple all works together on large blue sheets (A1 size) to create a beautiful group work.

Transport yourself

You need:
  1. piece of linoleum of 16 by 12 cm
  2. white paper towel from a towel dispenser
  3. mat
  4. block printing ink
  5. flat piece of glass
  6. linoleum roller
  7. lino press
What kind of transport do you know? Think of cars, limosines, trucks, airplanes, but also of skateboards, strollers etc. Everything with wheels can be used to transport persons!

Draw a mean of transportation on a piece of linoleum and cut it out. Shake the bottle of blockprint carefully to be sure oil will mix with the rest. Drip the paint on the glass and roll it out with the lino roller. Make several prints of your work on textured towel paper. Choose the best one to be your artwork.
