Starry Night like Vincent van Gogh


Show during both lessons hVan Gogh's painting Starry Night.  


Tell about Vincent van Gogh. Show Starry Night. Zoom in on the painting with Arts & Culture

The artwork students are going to make, will take two lessons.  

You need for the 1st lesson:
  1. black construction paper 
  2. aluminium foil
  3. piece of cardboard or a clay plate
  4. painter's tape
  5. tempera paint in blue and white 
  6. cotton swab
  7. brushes
  8. plate

Lesson 1
Wrap the cardboard/clay plate with aluminum foil and tape it on the back side. 

Step 1: For each pair of students there is a palette with blue and white paint. Students paint spiral shapes ons the aluminum foil with a brush and / or cotton swabs.


Stap 2: Make a print by placing a black sheet on top of your painting and pressing it.  

Stap 3: Remove the black sheet and let dry. 


 You need for the 2nd lesson:

  1. oilpastels in black, grey and purple
  2. tempera paint in yellow and white 
  3. black construction papier
  4. brushes
  5. scissors
  6. glue
  7. plate
Step 4: Draw and color the mountains with oilpastels. Draw the wavy movements in the air. The lines must run parallel to each other and also go in the same direction during a movement.
Show students that you can fade the colors by smearing the oil pastel. This way you can also make the colors darker or lighter.


Step 5: Determine where the large dark cypress should be and cut it out of black paper. (In grade 3 we gave students a shape to trace for the cypress.)


Step 6: Cut houses and glue them on tje painting. Draw lighted windows with oilpastels.  


Step 7: Paint moon and stars with tempera. 

Artworks are made by students of grade 3.

Collage in one color

 You need:

  1. several things in one color 
  2. camera


This is a homeschooling assignment. 
1. Collect small items of the same color in your house. The more, the better!
2. Place them on a white surface. 
3. Your items may touch each other, but don't have to. 
4. Make sure the edges are straight.
5. Take a picture of your collage.
6. Send the photo to your teacher.

Scratch a Christmas ball

You need:
  1. drawing sheet
  2. oli pastels or crayons
  3. black tempera paint 
  4. brush
  5. alufoil 
  6. ribbon
  7. toothpick or skewer
Color the sheet with crayons. Paint it over with black tempera paint and let dry. Scratch with a toothpick or skewer a Christmas ball and fill it with patterns. 
Cut a small piece of aluminumfoil and paste it on the ball with a folded ribbon under it.

Keith Haring figures on tissue paper

made by students of grade 3

You need:
  1. colored tissuepaper
  2. white drawing sheet
  3. jar with water
  4. brush
  5. scissors
  6. templates of Haring figures
  7. pencil
  8. black marker

Choose 2 or more colors of tissuepaper. Fold them in 16 squares. Cut out. 
Take a sheet of drawing paper, make it wet with a brush and water. Lay the pieces of tissue paper on this wet sheet and see how they bleed. Fill the whole sheet and be sure to use enough water. 
Let dry and remove the tissue papers. 
Cut two or more Haring templates and outline them with a pencil. Trace those lines with black marker and trace them again to make nice bold lines.

Blue dotted paper mache plates and bowls

 


You need:

  1. plate or bowl
  2. newspaper strips
  3. wallpaper paste
  4. white wall paint
  5. tempera paint
  6. cotton swabs
Cover newspaper strips with wallpaper paste on bowl or plate. Be sure to have 6 layers. Let dry.
Remove the paper mache carefully. Paint it white with wall paint. Let dry.
Use cotton swabs to print patters of blue dots.

The birds of George Braque lesson 2

You need:

  1. blue construction paper 
  2. colored paper
  3. scissors
  4. glue

George Braque (1882-1962) was a French painter and sculptor. Together with Picasso he was founder of cubism.
After is cubist time, Braque painted simplified figurative paintings of landscapes and still lifes with musical instruments and bottles. Remarkable are the letters and nummers Braque added to his works.
When Braque became ill, he was no longer able to paint. He turned to making color litographs of simple bird silhouettes. The same birds you that can also be seen in one of the ceiling paintings of the Louvre in Paris.

Look at the artwork Les oiseaux of George Braque.  

  • simple shapes (silhouet)
  • white outlines
  • blue background
  • geometrical shapes: stars and moon 

What do you have to do: 
Draw at least three silhouettes of birds on colored paper. Cut them. Cut geometrical shapes out of paper scraps. Paste everything on the blue sheet.

The flowers of Andy Warhol


You need:
  1. black construction paper A4 size
  2. brushes
  3. tempera paint
  4. scraps of colored paper
  5. scissors 
  6. glue
Andy Warhol - popart
Andy Warhol (1928-1897) was an American painter, photographer and filmaker. He started his working life as an advertising artist and became an artist in the early 1960's. He
 introduced everyday consumer products into his artwork, such as Campbell's soup cans and Coco Cola bottles. 

Warhol is one of the leading artists of Pop art. 
Using printing techniques he created large series of works of Marilyn Monroe or political themes such as the electric chair. Warhol used photographs of others to edit.
The Flowers series clearly show how Warhol applied the silkscreen printing technique. We see the flowers of the rare Hibiscus fragilus.  
The Flowers series are also seen as Warhol's answer toe Van Gogh's famous paintings of sunflowers and Claude Monet's artworks of water lilies. 

Stamp green and yellow tempera on a black sheet of paper leaving about one inch of the edges black. Let dry. 
Cut at least four flowers with five petals from scraps of colored paper. Do not draw in first, but cut by hand. Stick the flowers on the black sheet. No overlap.

Life-size Keith Haring groupwork



Show Haring's works and discuss them: 
  • comic like people
  • few details
  • thick black outlines
  • bright colors
  • dashes that indicate movement 
You need:
  1. life-size drawing sheets.
  2. tempera paint
  3. brushes grote vellen schetspapier 
Paste drawing sheets together. There must fit a child on it. 
Make groups of 4 students. Trace one student of each group using a black marker.


 Students paint the traced figure in one color. Fill the rest of the sheet with patterns in black paint.

The fall of Icarus - like Matisse


You need:
  1. dark blue construction paper
  2. black construction paper
  3. leftovers of construction paper in several colors
  4. scissors
  5. glue
In this lesson students cut a performance out of paper just like Matisse did with his work: The fall of Icarus. 
Matisse (1969-1954) was a French sculptor and painter. He is seen as the founder of fauvism. In his last years of life Matisse wasn't able to paint anymore. A pair of scissors was the tool he used to transform painted papers (painted by assistants) into a world of plants, animals, shapes and figures. 
One of these cut-outs is the artwork Icarus (1947). 

Read the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. 

Then look at the original artwerk Icarus.
What do you see? At what time of day were  Daedalus and Icarus flying and how can you see that? (at night - dark blue paper, stars). What do you notice about the body of Icarus?  (limbs have different thicknesses) What can you deduce from that? (no drawing in advance but cut out of the hand) What could be the red dot? (heart)  How do you know Icarus is falling? (arms spread, head not straight on the body) Can you see that Icarus is falling into the see? (no) What else could he fall in?

Task
The real Icarus fell into the sea, but our Icarus falls into something else ... and you  decide for yourself into what! Trees? A city? On a church?
Cut a falling human out of black construction paper.  You're not allowed to make a drawing in advance, just cut 'out of the hand'. If the first time fails, you take a new black sheet. Cut some stars. Cut a surface: in what is Icarus falling?  Place the loose parts on a blue sheet and stick all of them.

Transport - like Hundertwasser


Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) was an Austrian artist and architect who is best known for the colorful buildings he designed, built with attention to the environment and natureThe buildings of Hundertwasser are very recognizablestraight lines are missingthere is use of bright colors and many of his buildings have typical turrets. The influence of architect Gaudi is obvious.
The paintings of Hundertwasser have exuberant colours too and mainly undulating lines.

Show buildings of Hundertwasser on the digital board. Discuss the salient  features: bright coloursundulating linesThen show some paintings and discuss the things that stand out:

 the use of small areas outlined with black
 no straight lines, usually parallel lines
 recurring spiral shapes
 bright colours

Tell students they are going to draw means of transport in the style of Hundertwasser. 

You need:
  1. drawing sheet
  2. pencil
  3. markers
Draw a car, plane, boat or something you think is a mean of transport. Fill it with lines and patterns like Hundertwasser did. Cut your drawing and paste all means of transport on a great colored sheet.

Op art hands


You need:

  1. drawing sheet
  2. pencil
  3. ruler
  4. markers 
Draw a grid on the sheet with squares from 2 cm by 2cm. Draw your hand or an object with a pencil. Color this alternately with black an a color of your choice.  Color the background squares with the same colors, but so that the checkerboard pattern reverses.

Cat on head - like Corneille

You need:
  1. drawing sheet A3 size
  2. oil pastels
  3. liquid watercolor paint
  4. brushes
Corneille painted often cats, birds and women. There are some paintings where he painted the cat on the head of a woman!
Show Corneille paintings on the digital board or use google: 'Corneille woman cat'.

Who of you has a cat at home? Does it ever lie with you? Does your cat ever lie on your head?
Look at these artworks. What do you see? Why would the painter left the cat's eyes white?  Do the women on the paintings have hair? 

Draw a head on your sheet with oilpastel (dark color). Maybe your own head, but you may choose another head too. Draw a cat sitting, standing or lying down on the head. The cat looks like hair! What hairstyle it is, had to do with the position of the cat. 
Color your drawing with bright colors. Trace the outlines with a dark color if necessary and paint the background with liquid watercolor paint.

Corneille China

Made by a student of grade 1
You need:
  1. paper plates)
  2. black markers
  3. acrylic paint
  4. small brushes 
  5. jars with water and paper towels
Show some pictures of animals in Corneille's artwork. What do you see? What can you say about the colors? Do you like it? Why or why not? What animals do you see on the china?

Choose an animal. Use a black marker to draw it on your plate. You can also decide to draw just the head of the animal. Your drawing has to be large, it has to fill almost the entire plate. Can you think of anything else? Does the moon shine? Is your animal with others? Or is it in the grass? You can make it!

Color your drawing with acrylic paint and a brush. Choose bright colors and make sure it's opaque. Rinse your brush with each new color and dry it well in a paper towel; the acrylic paint shound not get wet.

Trace the marker lines again if necessary but only if the paint is really dry.

We wish you a merry Xmas

You need:
  1. green construction paper, 20 by 20 cm
  2. white tempera paint
  3. white pencil
  4. fine markers in white and black
  5. colored markers
Draw staves on the sheet using a white pencil. Make fingerprints for the snowmen: use the tip of your finger for the head, use your thumb for the body. Wait till the paint has dried. Use a black fine marker to draw brooms, branches=arms, stones=eyes+mouth. Draw the carrot = nose with orange marker and draw caps of hats on some of the snowmen.
Finally, draw the text of We wish you a merry Xmas (or another Christmas song) under the staves.

Catching leaves

Made by students of grade 4
You need:
  1. white drawing sheet A3 size
  2. oil pastels
  3. liquid water color paint
  4. brushes
Students trace their hands (thumbs point to each other) on the bottom of the sheet and color them with oil pastels. They draw swirling autumn leaves above the hands and color them with oil pastels too. Paint the background with diluted liquid water color paint and leave some space on the edges.

Sawing like Piet Mondriaan

You need:
  1. black construction paper
  2. plywood  
  3. ruler and pencil
  4. tempera paint in primary colors kleuren + white
  5. brush
  6. coping saw
  7. sandpaper
  8. glue
Divide a rectangular piece of thin plywood into rectangles and squares using ruler and pencil and saw them. Place every piece directly on the right spot the black construction paper. All pieces have to form a rectangle again. 

Sand the edges of pieces. Paint the pieces in primary colors and white. Past them on the black sheet.

Patterned trees collage

You need:
  1. white drawing sheet A3 size
  2. liquid water color paint
  3. brush
  4. construction paper in several colors
  5. scissors and glue
  6. black fine marker
Fold the sheet in two. Paint the upper half blue, the  lower half green. Leave the edges white. 
Cut several shapes from construction paper: ovals, 'clouds', circles.   
Use a fineliner to draw the trunk and fill the shapes with a variety of patterns.  
Paste the shapes on the painted sheet and be sure the shapes overlap each other to suggest depth.

The very lonely firefly


You need:

  1. black construction paper

  4. gold and silver markers

Students use white tempera to paint two or more jars at the bottom of the black sheet. They mix yellow and blue to paint grass in different shades of green over the jars. Draw fire flies with gold and silver markers and color them with pencils.

Groupwork like Joan Miró

Made by students of grade 3/4

Joan Miró's (Spain, 1893-1983) made paintings, sculptures, textile arts and theater. His paintings contain colorful organic shapes in bright colors: red, blue, yellow, green. The colored surfaces are outlined in black and frequently divided with black lines.

Show some of Miró's artwork. What do you see: bright colors, eyes, shapes outlined in black, divided surfases, stars. Talk about the difference between geometric and organic shapes. Talk about lines: straight, angular, rounded. What do you see in Miró's artwork?

The goal for a group of 4 students is: draw alternately lines on the white sheet with a permanent black marker. Make sure those lines look like Miró. Off course lines may cross! Then draw some elements Miró used too: eyes, stars, divided surfaces etc. Color the artwork. Be sure you're working with 4, so consult each other.

Ready? Sign the work with your personal signature in Miró style!

Xmas angels

You need:
  1. white drawing sheet
  2. watercolour paint
  3. brushes 
  4. black marker
  5. glitter 
Outline a saucer on a white sheet and cut it out. Draw an angel. Paint with watercolour paint. Outline with a fine glitter marker. 
Paste the artwork on another circle.
